The Secrets of Erskine Falls

Hello everyone, it’s been awhile since I have featured a place. Since I have spare time now, this is it. Is anyone thinking of going somewhere fun for the day? I live in Melbourne so there are a few places that I can think of but most would say “Let’s go for a drive to the Great Ocean Road”.

Normally people would create itineraries like we will stop over at Lorne, Apollo Bay and Otway. Think for a moment and if you are up for an adventure then come with me. Read this article.

Lorne is a nice place to relax. Wet your toes on the sand, watch people enjoy their leisure time at the beach. It is also famous for the Erskine Falls. Normally, people would go to the falls. Have a look at the viewing platform and take a photo. After taking the photo, “Ah ok, c’mon let’s go to the next site”. A few people with a bit of adventure would stay a bit and walk up front the falls unto the rocks and get their photo there. But here it is… Have you ever wondered what’s on the other side of the falls? The map seems to show a track going somewhere. Hmmmm, so here I was with a group of friends having fun then all of a sudden we’re like “Aren’t you curious about what is on the other side?” Since we all have adventurous spirits, and “fit” (not me ha ha ha) physiques, we tried to go to the other side. We followed the track down the falls and just went through it.

There are fallen trees large enough to be a bridge. If you have a bit of craziness you would climb up the trunk and just play on top of it ha ha ha like this guy (forgive me Itchy, it’s just that I find you really crazy).

Ok, continuing the journey maybe a few more meters and we hear another sound of water gushing from somewhere. Ohhhh, another waterfall. Hmmm, this is called the Straw Falls. Most people wouldn’t have seen it if you do not venture up ahead. Nice. The joy of having discovered this part gave us the rush to know more about the place. However, please be warned it was not an easy journey.

Minor Injury on the journey (Photographer: Cuchi Verceles
You could be injured along the way like this guy. (Sorry Luke, have to show them it’s not a journey in la la land) So, lesson learned if you go out venturing there make sure you have a first aid kit and a cellphone. Who knows what could happen. Just a word of caution ok. We walked a few more metres until we cannot walk anymore. So we decided to stop by and enjoy the scenery around us. Who knows what’s there if we continue further. This could be another part of the journey and maybe we would do it again someday.

After the trip, make sure you have something to eat with you and bring water as well, it could be really exhausting to go down there. Don't forget to bring warm clothes just in case because it really gets cold when you get to where the  large trees are.

So, to all you free spirits, just take a hike enjoy the day. Who knows what you will find. For me, I felt really happy we did that journey. It might be boring if you have the wrong company but with the right group of friends who share the same passion, it would be a blast. I hope the same goes for you as well.
